RESIDENTIAL REMODELLING – CONCEPT DESIGN + CHANGE OF USE

This project involved transforming an underused detached garage into a fully functional residential annex designed specifically for an elderly relative. My role was to develop the concept design, prepare the full set of existing and proposed architectural drawings and construction details.

Working closely with the client, the design brief centred around creating an accessible, self-contained living space while maintaining privacy and independence from the main dwelling. The proposal includes a substantial extension to the existing garage footprint and a full internal reconfiguration to introduce a comfortable bedroom, spacious living room, accessible bathroom, and a generously sized open-plan kitchen and dining area. The layout has been carefully arranged to support ease of movement and long-term adaptability for future mobility needs.

To ensure the annex feels welcoming and practical, the design incorporates a dedicated private entrance as well as direct connections to outdoor space. The proposed floor plan demonstrates how natural light, circulation, and room proportions have been optimised to deliver a homely, calm, and functional environment.

Externally, the new elevations have been designed to harmonise with the main property and surrounding context. Matching brickwork, roof tiles, and updated UPVC windows and doors provide a coherent architectural appearance, while the enhanced pitched roof form improves insulation, drainage performance, and long-term durability. Detailed elevation and roof drainage plans were produced to demonstrate construction approach, material integration, and compliance with building regulation standards.

Throughout the project, I delivered: Full measured survey and documentation of existing conditions, Concept options and refinement based on client needs and accessibility considerations, Proposed extension footprint, internal layout, and structural allowances, Complete drawing package including plans, elevations, sections, and roof drainage strategy, Visualisations and diagrams to communicate layout and design intent and Coordination with structural engineering requirements for foundation upgrades.

This project showcases my ability to repurpose underused structures into high-quality living spaces that support multigenerational living, providing comfort, dignity, and independence for elderly occupants while adding lasting value to the property.​​​
