RESIDENTIAL EXTENSION & REMODELLING – CONCEPT DESIGN + PLANNING DRAWINGS + CONSTRUCTION DETAILS

The clients approached me with a clear objective: to create a more functional, family-friendly kitchen and dining space that improved natural light, enhanced connection to the rear garden, and supported day-to-day living. The existing ground floor layout was dark, compartmentalised, and impractical, offering little visibility to the garden where their young child plays. My role was to redesign this area into a bright, sociable environment that integrates cooking, dining, and family interaction, while remaining sensitive to the property’s age, character, and location within a conservation area.

To achieve this, I carried out a full measured survey of the existing building to accurately capture structural constraints and ensure all design interventions respected both the architectural proportions and local conservation guidelines. The proposal introduces a modest rear extension designed to tie seamlessly into the existing brickwork and roofline. Materials were carefully selected to match the original façade, ensuring continuity between old and new. A large structural roof light was incorporated to dramatically improve daylight penetration into the centre of the home, creating a bright, airy space throughout the day. Enlarged rear patio doors were positioned to provide uninterrupted views of the garden, enabling parents to supervise outdoor play while cooking or entertaining indoors.

The reconfigured layout improves circulation, maximises usable floor space, and introduces a considered balance of cabinetry, work surfaces, and integrated seating. These upgrades significantly enhance the usability of the space while maintaining sensitivity to the surrounding built environment and conservation constraints.

Throughout the project, I provided: Full measured survey and existing-condition documentation, Concept design development for the extended kitchen/dining layout, Rear elevation studies and material-matching assessments for conservation compliance, Existing and proposed plans, elevations, and rooflight configuration drawings, Integration of structural allowances for the rooflight aperture and rear opening, Planning-ready drawing package with conservation-area justifications and visualisations and layout optimisation to communicate design intent.

This proposal successfully transforms an outdated and enclosed kitchen into a bright, functional family hub. By introducing a roof light, enhanced glazing, and a sensitive extension that matches the historic fabric of the property, the design creates a welcoming, practical environment that supports modern family life while respecting the character of the conservation area.
